Welcome to Brookings...
Just six miles north of the California border and often referred to as the Banana Belt of the Pacific Northwest, Brookings has temperatures that range from the 70's during summer days to the 40's on the coldest of winter nights. This mild climate, the beautiful Pacific coastline and its quality of life have made Brookings a retirement destination since the 1980’s. Historically, its economy was based in lumber and fishing. Today, lumber and fishing are a part of a wider economic base which includes servicing a large and growing retirement population and an expanding tourist industry.
Agriculturally, Brookings is part of what is known as the Easter Lily Capital of the World, a small, isolated coastal region, about 12 miles long and no more than one half mile wide, along the Oregon-California border. Because of its soil quality and the climate, this region produces nearly all of the bulbs for the Easter Lily market in North America. Often photographed for calendars that celebrate the American landscape, the Brookings area is one of breathtaking coastal scenery. The annual Azalea Festival during Memorial Day weekend, monthly “art walks”, an extensive city park system, campgrounds, hiking trails, pleasure boating, sport fishing, whale watching, surfing, and windsurfing, as well as shopping and dining on fresh seafood are all good reasons to come and explore this Southern Oregon coastal community.
